Chapter Six

Layla was at MyPlace the next morning, looking at the accounts receivable spreadsheet she inherited from Juanita and wishing she paid more attention in accounting class when Treyton stuck his head in her door.

“’ Got a minute, Boss?” he inquired hopefully.

Feeling a rush of relief, Layla pushed her laptop away and nodded for him to come in. Treyton did so and sat in front of her desk. He took the look of frustration on Layla’s face.

“You know, I think I should point out that you look positively overwhelmed,” he started.

Layla threw up her hands. “Is it that obvious? I can’t make heads or tails of the accounts receivable. With all the new monetary donations, I think we are close to outgrowing our grant. I need to figure it out as soon as possible.” She moaned.

Treyton nodded thoughtfully. “Have you thought of hiring an accountant?”

She hadn’t thought of it before. “I am not sure if we can afford one.”

He nodded again. “I have an idea. Let me talk to a buddy of mine at law school who specializes in non-profit organizations. Perhaps there is a way to stretch the grant limit. Otherwise, we will figure something out. Do you have time for another question?”

With the grant situation temporarily on hold, Layla was momentarily free. “Of course. What’s on your mind, Mr. St. James?”

Treyton warmed quickly to his subject. “My mother has been up to her tricks again. Do you know the 5K she planned for this weekend?” he asked.

She nodded.

“Well, she sent a press release this morning, stating that the two of us,” he motioned between them for emphasis, “are running it together and attending the dance that night. I already told her she’s out of line for making such arrangements without consulting you, but the woman has a mind of her own—”

Layla cut him off and commented, “I think it’s a great idea.”

That caught his attention. “You do?”

She nodded again. “It will be great publicity, and I haven’t had a good run in a while.”

Treyton raised one well-arched brow. “Do you want to go to the dance with me?”

She smirked. “As a matter of fact, I do,” she said. “Now, you have wasted enough of my time. Get out of my office so that I can get some work done.”

He stood up straight and saluted. “Yes, ma’am, Miss Program Director. Your wish is my command.”

Layla couldn’t help but smile as she watched Treyton turn on his heel and march out the door.
